AMTA Release!

I'm happy to announce that AMTA (Another Metroidy Text Adventure) is now available.

This little project was done in a rush back in 2016. It was a yearly tradition in the AM2R Blog to produce something fun for April's Fools. A couple of days before the event I made a very simple text adventure template in Game Maker, it was a lot faster than investing time in proper text adventure engines and figuring out how to deploy them correctly.

The text in the original release was a bit rough around the edges, but fun. It told the story of a scientist exploring Planet SR388, facing danger at every corner, and dying a lot. I played classic Sierra adventures as a kid, and I found it interesting (and annoying) that sometimes very mundane actions end up in death. So I made most of the typical metroidvania scenarios play out like that, often mentioning how gamey they feel.

New in this version

  • New and improved story with actual spell checking this time
  • Story modifications to remove copyrighted names (gotta keep the DMCA ninjas at bay)
  • Added checkpoints at key moments in the story

What's next?

I might make the most of Game Maker as a text adventure platform and add some eye candy eventually. Some CRT effects, scanlines, configurable color palette, different languages if there's enough demand. I could expand the story a bit with more locations.
Maybe sound / ambiance for some events.

You'll find the game playable on browser here: https://doctorm64.itch.io/amta
I hope you have fun, and if there's any critiques / suggestions, I'll be happy to hear them.

Cheers!
- Milton
